SMHS conducts high-quality research projects at a state, national and international level across all its hospitals and community health sites.

We believe in embedding research into clinical care by encouraging our staff to be curious and ask questions about how we can do things better, which can then lead to a formal research proposal. These collaborative projects often involve multi-disciplinary teams and include investigator initiated, non-commercial and commercial clinical trials (Phase I to IV), as well as non-clinical trials such as qualitative projects.

Research Support and Development Unit

Based at Fiona Stanley Hospital, the centralised SMHS Research Support and Development Unit (RSDU) aims to:

improve the efficiency and quality of ethical review and site authorisation, especially for multi-site projects and clinical trials
support local clinical researchers to understand and meet their regulatory obligations.

SMHS Research Strategy 2023–2033

SMHS has developed its inaugural Research Strategy in collaboration with multidisciplinary researchers, consumers and executives to set a direction for research over the next ten years.

The strategy will influence our focus and priorities, assist to improve on our research culture and capability and deliver on our vision of providing excellence in health and wellbeing.
